Pinellas Park Data Center Plan Sparks Concerns

A Boston-based developer, American Tower, has filed a building permit for a data center in Pinellas Park, Florida, sparking concerns about infrastructure and environmental impact. The proposed facility would be located at 10700 76th Court North, less than a quarter-mile from the nearest home.

Data Center Growth and Local Concerns

The data center would require the demolition of an existing empty building on the half-acre site. American Tower plans to install an eight-foot security fence and four large generator pads on the property. Pinellas Park officials will treat the facility as a conditional use, requiring formal review and public approval.

Local residents and business owners are watching the development closely, with concerns about noise, air emissions, and water capacity. Nearby Hernando and Citrus counties have already passed temporary bans on data centers, while Pasco County commissioners have approved an initial vote on a one-year construction pause.

Neighborhood Reaction and Future Council Decisions

Nearby business owners, such as Matt Burns, head coach at CrossFit Tampa Bay, are still trying to learn what is required to run these facilities and what impact they will have on the community. City administrators are encouraging neighborhood residents to attend upcoming public meetings to voice their opinions and ask questions.

The Pinellas Park City Council will ultimately vote to approve or deny the permit request after the formal review process concludes. The city’s community development administrator, Nick Colonna, noted that any development application undergoes a strict review to measure its direct footprint on the surrounding community.
