A group of voting rights advocates wants to help Tarrant County residents register eligible neighbors to vote ahead of the November election. The nonpartisan League of Women Voters of Tarrant County has coordinated a June 27 training session for volunteer deputy registrars, those appointed to register eligible Texans to vote.
Volunteer Deputy Registrar Training
The task can be an easy first step for those interested in civic engagement ahead of the midterms, said president Janet Mattern. To become a volunteer deputy registrar, those interested must complete an online training, then schedule an appointment with the county voting registrar to get certified.
Volunteer deputy registrars must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen and a Texas resident. Those determined by a court to be mentally incapacitated or partially incapacitated without the right to vote are ineligible, according to the Texas Secretary of State. Volunteer deputy registrars are not required to be registered to vote.
Once appointed, volunteer deputy registrars distribute and accept voter registration applications from eligible Tarrant County residents. Deputies assist applicants with filling out the registration form, review applications for completeness and deliver applications to the county voting registrar.
Tarrant County residents may check their voter registration status through the county’s website or the state’s website. The deadline to register for the Nov. 3 midterms is Oct. 5.
