Rogan and Burchett: Media to Blame, Trump Assassination Attempts Real

Joe Rogan and Rep. Tim Burchett dug into the string of attacks targeting President Donald Trump, from Butler, Pennsylvania in 2024 to the WHCA dinner, arguing the media’s role and security lapses deserve scrutiny. Rogan defended the president against conspiracy claims while Burchett called the first incident a planned capitulation rather than a simple security breakdown. The conversation hinges on how media narratives, what Rogan calls Trump Derangement Syndrome, shape public perception and potentially fuel violence.

Rogan opened by confronting skeptics who say the first assassination attempt was staged, pushing back hard on that idea and on anyone suggesting Trump engineered sympathy. “There’s a lot of people running around out there saying that that first Trump assassination was a setup, and that it was a hoax, and that Trump did it to try to get people to be more sympathetic to him,” Rogan said as he spoke to Burchett. He followed quickly with a practical rebuke: “Anybody who says that doesn’t know anything about guns.”

The detail that the bullet grazed the president’s ear after he had turned to look at an immigration chart undercuts any tidy theory of staging, Rogan argued. He made a technical point about distance and chance to emphasize how unlikely a contrived “near miss” would be, insisting that such precision simply doesn’t happen by design. “There is not a person on Earth that could nick your ear at 140 yards, reliably,” he said, drawing attention back to the raw facts of the scene.

Burchett framed the Butler breach as something worse than an accident: a deliberate surrender of control. He compared it to an ordinary security lapse in a crowd and dismissed that explanation for what the president faced. “If Tim Burchett sneaks into the back of a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert and gets close to the stage, that’s a ‘breakdown,’” Burchett quipped, arguing what happened in Butler, Pennsylvania, was “a complete capitulation.”

The congressman warned that simply labeling incidents as failures ignores the culture around them, and he urged people to recognize the danger in the current environment. “They put Trump out there and there’s people that don’t like him,” the congressman warned. “You can say what you want to about programming and things, I just think it’s out there. I think it is a reality and I think we better — people had better wake up.”

Rogan drilled into how media framing feeds the public picture of Trump, saying relentless negative narratives radicalize people who don’t have time to dig into nuance. He pointed to how constant, simplified storylines create enemies in the minds of viewers who get their world from headlines and short segments. “People hate him so much and the narrative in the media, this Trump Derangement narrative that you see in the media is so strong and people are so programmed by it,” Rogan said.

He connected that conditioning to long-running stories like Russia collusion, arguing that being spoon-fed a single version of events can produce dangerous, black-and-white thinking. That, he suggested, is where perceptions shift from dislike to dehumanization, and potentially to violence. “You got that Russia collusion stuff shoved down your throat by mainstream media for years, and you believe all of it 100%, and so you really believed he’s a terrible person, Russian agent, all these different – so you want someone to kill him.”

Between the WHCA episode and the Butler incident, Rogan and Burchett both insisted the nation must reckon with how narratives and security interact. They rejected easy conspiracies about staging while demanding accountability for how a president could be exposed repeatedly. The core of their argument is straightforward: stop normalizing hostile rhetoric, fix security protocols, and question the role of a media culture that profits from polarization.
