Trump Endorsement Helps Collins Win

Rep. Mike Collins, endorsed by President Donald Trump, has won the GOP primary runoff in Georgia to take on Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff in the November election. This victory marks a win for Trump in a proxy battle with Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, who had backed Collins’ opponent, former football coach Derek Dooley.

Georgia Governor’s Race

In the governor’s race, self-funding businessman Rick Jackson defeated the candidate endorsed by both Trump and Kemp, despite not having Trump’s endorsement. Jackson will face Democratic nominee Keisha Lance Bottoms in the general election.

Trump’s endorsement of Collins was seen as a way to get back at Kemp, who had refused to support Trump’s claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 presidential election. Collins, a conservative who has aligned himself with the “Make America Great Again” movement, will face an uphill battle against Ossoff, who has a significant lead in campaign funds.

Implications for 2028

The outcome of the Senate race in Georgia could have implications for the 2028 presidential election, as Ossoff is seen as a potential contender. However, Ossoff must first win re-election in November, and Collins is determined to stop him.
