All detainees have been removed from Alligator Alcatraz in the Everglades, according to a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security. This is as a precautionary measure since we’re in hurricane season, the spokesperson said.
The agency said the facility’s soft structure could put detainees at risk if a storm rolls through. The Department of Homeland Security said all detainees have been transferred to other facilities. It is not clear when or if the facility will reopen.
