Off-duty Montgomery firefighter Lt. Demetrius Gilmore is being recognized for his quick thinking and lifesaving actions at the Bell Road YMCA in Montgomery, Alabama. On Thursday, June 11, Gilmore was playing pickleball at the YMCA when he noticed a commotion on a nearby court. He found a man collapsed on the gym floor with no pulse and showing signs of cardiac arrest.
Quick Response Saves a Life
Gilmore directed YMCA staff to call 911 and bring an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) while he immediately began CPR. He also coordinated with others nearby to assist with rescue efforts and helped prepare the AED for use. When the AED arrived, Gilmore applied the pads and delivered a shock as directed by the device. After another round of CPR, the man regained a pulse and began breathing on his own.
Montgomery Fire/Rescue crews arrived shortly afterward and continued advanced medical care. Before being transported to Baptist Medical Center South, the man had regained consciousness and was alert and responsive. Fire Captain C.L. Wright praised Gilmore’s actions, saying they reflect the values of Montgomery Fire/Rescue and demonstrate the professionalism, dedication, and commitment expected from firefighters.
