Independents Hit Highest Level in Decade

A recent CNN poll reveals that nearly half of Americans, 47%, identify as independents, marking the highest level of partisan independence in over a decade. This shift is particularly notable among younger voters, male voters, and White voters without college degrees, who have moved away from the GOP since 2024.

Demographic Breakdown

Independents tend to be younger, with 63% of those who don’t affiliate with a party being under 50. They are also more likely to live in urban areas and have lower household incomes, with nearly half earning less than $50,000 annually. Furthermore, independents are less engaged in politics, with only 67% registered to vote and 25% frequently seeking out the latest political news.

The poll suggests a shift away from Republicans, with Democrats and Republicans splitting the remainder of the population, at 27% and 26%, respectively. When including those who lean towards a party, 39% of Americans align more with Democrats, 37% with Republicans, and 25% do not lean either way.
