Independents Reach Highest Level in Decade

Nearly half of Americans, 47%, identify as independents, the highest level in over a decade, according to a recent CNN poll. This shift away from the major parties has been ongoing, with independents growing by roughly 10 points since President Donald Trump’s first term.

Demographic Breakdown

Independents are notably younger than partisans, with 63% of independents under the age of 50. They are also more likely to live in urban areas and have lower household incomes, with nearly half earning less than $50,000 per year.

The poll also found that many independents lean towards one of the two major parties, but a significant portion, 25%, do not lean either way. Among registered voters, Democrats narrowly outnumber Republicans, 31% to 28%, with 41% identifying as independents.

The shift away from the GOP is particularly notable among younger voters, male voters, and White voters without college degrees. Since 2024, these groups have moved away from the Republican party, but not necessarily towards the Democrats.

Implications for the Midterm Elections

The growing number of independents could have significant implications for the upcoming midterm elections. With many independents still undecided, both parties will need to work to win over these voters in order to gain an advantage.
