The Georgetown Police Department has welcomed its newest officer, Clayton, a 2-year-old chocolate lab mix and the department’s first-ever explosives dog. Clayton joined the force in May alongside handler Officer Tyler LaRue.
Explosives Detection and Safety
Clayton’s role is to sniff out threats, including bomb threats, suspicious packages, and devices. He can also conduct pre-event sweeps for large events like the festival of the horse. According to Officer LaRue, the rise in bomb threats means Clayton will have his paws full.
Clayton went through 16 weeks of training before meeting LaRue, and then they completed another 6 weeks of training together. LaRue expressed his enthusiasm for having Clayton as his partner, especially since Clayton is a rescue dog from Casey County.
The department also has a narcotics dog and an electronics detection dog. With Clayton on board, the Georgetown Police Department is better equipped to handle potential threats and keep the community safe.
