Wilkeson Mayor Resigns

Wilkeson Mayor Jayme Peloli has resigned, effective immediately, as announced in a letter posted to the Town of Wilkeson’s social media page on June 11. In her letter, Peloli expressed her gratitude for the trust and partnership of the community, stating that serving as Mayor has been one of the greatest honors of her life.

Background and Future Plans

Peloli’s time as mayor was marked by her advocacy for the town, particularly after the Carbon River/Fairfax bridge was permanently closed in April 2025. This closure had a significant economic impact on the town, as tourism to Mount Rainier’s Mowich lake, which is only accessible via the bridge, decreased substantially. Peloli received two awards from the Washington Coalition for Open Government for her efforts in using public records to reveal deferred maintenance on the bridge, which led to its failure.

Although Peloli did not provide details about her future plans, she stated that she remains deeply committed to the Town of Wilkeson and looks forward to continuing to serve its future through advocacy and collaboration. The town of Wilkeson has voted to appoint Council member Travis Waldher to fill the role until the 2027 general election.

In related news, prior to her resignation, Peloli announced that the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is moving forward with an application to the federal Bridge Investment Program for up to $100 million to replace the 103-year-old bridge. The application is due at the end of June, and awards will be announced in the fall.

Individuals interested in filling the vacant council position can send a letter of interest to the council by June 30, with an expected appointment on July 8. For more information or to apply, email [email protected].
