New York City was filled with excitement and chaos as Knicks fans took to the streets to celebrate the team’s first NBA championship in over 50 years. The celebration turned destructive, with 63 people arrested and 10 police officers injured.
Celebration Turns Chaotic
The night began peacefully, with fans gathering outside Madison Square Garden to watch the game. However, as the night wore on, the crowds became increasingly destructive, with five school buses set ablaze in Times Square and five police cars damaged on Sixth Avenue.
A 17-year-old boy was shot in the foot near Times Square, and three persons of interest are in custody. The NYPD reported four slashings or stabbings overnight, and 10 officers were injured, including one who was punched in the face and another struck with a glass bottle.
Victory Parade Planned
A victory parade will be held on Thursday, with New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani announcing that it will be the first ticker-tape parade in Knicks history. The parade will honor the team’s historic win and the city’s excitement.
Despite the chaos, fans were ecstatic about the team’s win, with one fan telling CNN, ‘I’m a wreck right now… I knew we would do it.’ Knicks owner James Dolan had urged fans to celebrate safely, saying, ‘We want everybody tonight in New York, be safe, okay? Celebrate, but be safe.’
