President Donald Trump and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced Sunday that the US and Iran have reached a peace deal. The agreement is intended to bring a halt to the US and Israel’s war against Iran, which began on February 28.
The deal includes the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon. A signing ceremony is scheduled for Friday in Switzerland.
Details of the Agreement
No other details of the agreement were immediately available. However, Kazem Gharibabadi, the deputy foreign minister of Iran, said a memorandum of understanding is complete and the US naval blockade against Iran will end Sunday night.
The US and Iran have at times given very different outlines of the terms of the draft deal, with Trump and Iranian officials clashing over the release of frozen Iranian assets.
The Lebanese government and the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah have not made any public comment on the agreement as Israel has targeted parts of Lebanon in a campaign to dismantle the proxy fighters who launch munitions at Israel.
Thousands have been killed in the wider war that has consumed the region, with the highest death tolls reported in Iran and Lebanon.
