Lawmakers Push to Rename Post Office

A post office in San Diego’s Logan Heights neighborhood is set to close in July, but lawmakers are pushing to rename it after a local civil rights activist. U.S. Senator Alex Padilla and Rep. Juan Vargas introduced legislation to rename the post office after Armando Rodriguez, a World War II veteran and Latino educator who served in the administrations of four presidents.

Rodriguez’s Legacy

Rodriguez was a champion for civil liberties and educational opportunities for Latino communities in California. He grew up in Logan Heights and worked as an administrator at the San Diego Unified School District. According to Padilla, ‘Armando Rodriguez was a champion for civil liberties and educational opportunities for Latino communities in California. His legacy has left an indelible mark on San Diego and it’s only right that we recognize his contributions as a Latino civil rights advocate.’

The post office, currently designated as the ‘César E. Chávez Post Office,’ will be renamed if the legislation passes. However, the post office is set to close, and a spokesperson for the USPS confirmed that a search for ‘alternate quarters’ has begun.

Uncertain Future

The future of the renaming effort is uncertain, as the post office’s closure date has not been confirmed. A spokesperson for Padilla said, ‘The Postal Service still has not confirmed a date for the closure, but our office is closely tracking movements on this front.’ Vargas’ team also stated that they will ‘closely monitor updates as this process gets underway.’
