Gluttony: A Sin of Excess

The word gluttony comes from the Latin “gluttonem”, meaning “to swallow” or “gulp down”. In Christian teaching, gluttony is one of the Seven Deadly Sins because it reveals a heart that believes “more” will finally satisfy us.

What is Gluttony?

Gluttony is not just about enjoying a good meal, but about greedy, unrestrained consumption. It can manifest in different ways, such as overworking, excessive scrolling, or substance abuse. Anything we feed in excess can become gluttony when it moves from enjoyment to control.

We live in a world that often encourages excess, and it’s easy to get caught up in the cycle of consumption. However, God offers us a better way. Instead of seeking comfort in consumption, we can bring our stress and worries to Him.

It’s essential to recognize that we all have different thresholds for what constitutes gluttony. What may be excessive for one person may not be the same for another. Therefore, it’s crucial not to judge someone else’s struggles with gluttony, but rather to focus on our own relationship with God and seek His guidance.
