A new cookbook is helping families rediscover the flavors and traditions of America’s national parks. As the nation approaches its 250th birthday, the cookbook features 100 recipes inspired by all 63 national parks, from the tropical waters of Florida’s Dry Tortugas National Park to the rugged wilderness of Alaska’s Gates of the Arctic National Park.
Regional Flavors and Traditions
The cookbook, co-authored by Melissa Knific, draws from local ingredients, historic lodges, nearby communities, and regional food traditions. For example, the cookbook features Key Lime Coconut Bars inspired by the iconic flavors of Florida, as well as a salad featuring Key West pink shrimp, a nod to the waters surrounding the islands.
Other recipes draw from America’s agricultural roots, such as a roasted chicken recipe inspired by local farms operating within the boundaries of Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio. Knific hopes that the cookbook will serve as an inspiration for people to try new recipes and experience the flavors of America’s national parks.
National parks have long been gathering places for American families, and food plays a significant role in preserving memories of these trips. Knific believes that the cookbook will help people recreate the tastes and memories of their visits to the national parks, and inspire others to plan their own trips.
