Wimbledon has announced a 20% increase in total prize money, with singles champions set to earn $4.8 million each. The total prize money, including player per diems, will be $85.8 million.
Increased Prize Money
The increase is the largest annual increase in the tournament’s history. The All England Club chair, Deborah Jevans, stated that the increase recognizes the success of the championships and the sustainable program that allows for investment in facilities and support for British and international tennis.
First-round prize money will increase by 21% to $107,000, and the qualifying rounds will see a total increase of 25%. The runner-up in the men’s and women’s singles will receive $2.4 million each, an 18% increase over last year.
The increase in prize money is a result of players’ calls for a greater share of revenues from the four Grand Slams. Recently, top players, including No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and men’s No. 1 Jannik Sinner, have spoken out about the need for increased prize money.
