Gary Boren, a born-again Christian and pro-life advocate, is seeking to return to the Lubbock City Council in the June 27 special election for the District 4 seat. Boren previously served on the council from 2002 to 2007 and is now looking to bring his experience back to the table.
Experience and Priorities
Boren has a wealth of experience in government and business, having worked with three different governors to solve problems in Texas. He was appointed to chair the Texas Council on Vocational Education, the Texas Appraisal Task Force, and the Brazos River Authority. Boren’s priorities include cracking down on crime, building up local water infrastructure, and keeping taxes low.
Boren is concerned about the city’s ability to deal with crime issues and wants to be more aggressive in recruiting and retaining police officers. He also wants to update the city’s water supply to a 150-year plan and explore desalinization options.
Local Issues
Boren is leery of proposed data centers in Lubbock and thinks they should be considered on a case-by-case basis. He feels good about the standards set by the LEDA and the Planning and Zoning Commission to protect the city’s water.
The special election will fill an unexpired term, and Boren’s goal is to get the job done in two years. He says he has no special interests and will work for the citizens’ best interests, not special interests at City Hall.
