Residents in Richardson, Texas, are speaking out against Amazon’s drone delivery program, which they say is causing noise and safety concerns in their neighborhoods. The program, which was approved by the Richardson City Council last year, has been met with resistance from residents who claim they were not adequately informed about the program before it launched.
Concerns Over Noise and Safety
Residents say the drones, which can weigh up to 80 pounds, are flying over their homes and a nearby school on a regular basis, causing noise and disrupting their daily lives. Some residents have reported hearing the drones every three to five minutes, and have expressed concerns about the potential risks of the drones crashing or causing other accidents.
One resident, Angie Rogers, said she can hear the drones even when she is inside her home with the TV on. Another resident, Kristi Graham, said the drones have taken away the peace and quiet in her neighborhood. “They’ve taken away our peace in our neighborhood and our neighborhood streets,” she said.
Protest and Demands for Action
On Saturday, residents from at least four neighborhoods took to the streets to protest the drone delivery program and demand action from Amazon and the city. The residents are calling for the company to relocate its drone facility to a different area, or to stop flying the drones over their homes altogether. “I just wish they would relocate this drone port to a different area,” said resident Nancy Crowe.
Amazon has said that customer feedback on its Prime Air deliveries has been overwhelmingly positive, and that the company has made efforts to engage with the community before launching the program. However, residents say they have seen little change despite their concerns and protests.
