Texas Expands Medical Cannabis Program

Texas has taken a significant step forward in expanding its medical cannabis program, providing new hope for veterans and patients suffering from chronic pain and other conditions. The Texas Compassionate Use Program (TCUP) has been expanded to include more qualifying conditions, such as chronic pain, traumatic brain injuries, and Crohn’s disease.

Expansion of TCUP

The expansion of TCUP is a result of the passage of House Bill 46, which was signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott. The bill allows for the use of medical cannabis for patients with certain medical conditions, and it also provides for the regulation of the industry. Patients can now participate in the program through the state’s secure Compassionate Use Registry of Texas (CURT), which is confidential and protected by law.

Under the expanded TCUP, patients can now consult with physicians via telemedicine, and satellite retail locations will expand access beyond major metro areas. The list of qualifying conditions has grown substantially, and patients with chronic pain, traumatic brain injuries, Crohn’s disease, and those in hospice or palliative care can now participate. Pulmonary inhalation has been added as a permitted delivery method, giving patients more options for treatment.

Benefits for Veterans

The expansion of TCUP is particularly significant for veterans, who often struggle with chronic pain and other conditions. The program provides a safe and regulated way for veterans to access medical cannabis, which can be an effective treatment for their conditions. Every product sold through a licensed dispensary must include a full Certification of Analysis, verifying potency and confirming it is free of heavy metals, pesticides, and harmful solvents.

The expansion also increases the number of licensed dispensaries from three to eventually up to fifteen, which will lead to lower prices, better products, and greater innovation. This is a significant step forward for Texas, and it provides new hope for patients and veterans who have been struggling with chronic conditions.
