June is Men’s Health Awareness Month, a time to focus on the health and wellbeing of men in our community. Doctor Adam Alexander and Curtis Murray, a former cancer patient, recently shared their stories to raise awareness about the importance of men’s health.
Early Detection is Key
According to Doctor Alexander, early detection is crucial when it comes to preventative screenings. "When you detect diseases early, such as prostate cancer, you have a better chance of survival," he said. Curtis Murray, who is a survivor of prostate cancer, shared his story of how he was diagnosed after going in for a routine checkup.
Murray said he was going in for testosterone treatments when his doctor informed him that his PSA levels were high. Three days later, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. "It absolutely flipped my world upside down for a moment," he said.
Raising Awareness
Doctor Alexander and Murray are working to raise awareness about men’s health and the importance of regular checkups. They are hosting a virtual event, the DAD Summit, on June 20th to educate men and their families about the risks and prevention of various health issues.
"We want to inspire men to get screened and make healthy lifestyle changes," said Doctor Alexander. He also emphasized the importance of family history and being aware of any potential health risks. "Knowing your family history can really help prevent diseases," he said.
Murray also shared his experience of how he had warning signs before his diagnosis, such as frequent urination and night sweats. "Men need to be educated and proactive about their health," he said.
Simple Lifestyle Changes
Doctor Alexander also shared some simple lifestyle changes that men can make to lower their risk of health issues. "Increasing fruit and vegetable intake, increasing physical activity, and stopping smoking can make a big difference," he said.
