Sarepta’s Healing Fields

In a heartwarming display of patriotism, 734 American flags have been set up on the hillsides near Sarepta, Louisiana, creating a stunning visual tribute known as the ‘Healing Fields’. The inspiration for this massive display dates back to 2006, when Carol and Tony Mullins first saw a similar tribute in Waterloo, New York.

A Labor of Love

The Mullinses have been working tirelessly to preserve the traditional values of American life, and this display is a testament to their dedication. Setting up hundreds of full-sized flags is a grueling task, but the community has consistently stepped in to help. In fact, over a thousand people offered to assist with putting up the flags, showcasing the strong sense of community and patriotism in the area.

Over the years, the couple has also gifted nearly 300 flags to visitors and local organizations, spreading the message of patriotism and unity. For the Mullinses, the hard work and dedication that goes into maintaining the display are worth it, as they see the impact it has on passersby. The display serves as an essential history lesson for a younger generation growing up in a vastly different world, where the flag is not always viewed with the same automatic reverence they were taught.

A Family Affair

The Mullinses are not alone in their large-scale patriotism. About 30 miles away, the Abshire family annually paints their own hillside in red, white, and blue, showcasing their pride and commitment to American values. This deeply rooted tradition resonates locally, and the display has become a beloved part of the community’s fabric.

The couple views the nation as a flawed but resilient family, and the display is meant to inspire the children who walk through it. As Tony Mullins said, ‘Students need to see this. There is patriotism right here. To stand among those flags and listen – it just gives you goosebumps.’
