Sennessee Senator Eric Schmitt recently appeared on the Ruthless Podcast to discuss his spectacular diving catch in the Congressional Baseball Game and the changing landscape of college athletics.
College Athletics Reform
Schmitt has been an active legislator in reforming college athletics, leading efforts with Commerce Committee Chair Ted Cruz and Ranking Member Maria Cantwell to bring change to college sports. He believes that the current landscape is chaotic and that college football previously subsidized non-revenue sports, which is now at risk.
In February, Schmitt released a blueprint for college athletics addressing transfer portal chaos, non-revenue sport protections, and conference realignment stability. He also wrote a letter with Senator Jon Husted to Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman advocating for the conference to add Saint Louis University and the University of Dayton.
Schmitt’s passion for athletics extends beyond his annual appearance on the field at Nationals Park. He believes that Congress has a role in reforming college athletics and granting antitrust exemption status to the NCAA or another governing body.
