Keith Urban Releases Yacht Rock Album

Country music star Keith Urban has released a new album, ‘Flow State’, which features an unexpected shift in genre towards yacht rock. The album includes 10 yacht rock covers and an original song, ‘We Go Back’, which Urban wrote with BRELAND, Sam Sumser, and Sean Small in 2020.

Urban’s Inspiration

Urban’s journey to creating ‘Flow State’ began when he purchased and restored the former Tracking Room studio in Nashville, renaming it The Sound. To break in the space, he hired a few session musicians and suggested they record a yacht rock song. The sessions were so enjoyable that they decided to book a few more, and eventually, the album took shape.

Urban describes the songs he chose to cover on ‘Flow State’ as feeling as good to sing now as they did when they were initially released. He believes the music is an antidote to the stresses of the times, providing an opportunity for audiences to escape and revel in the joyfulness of the music.

The album features collaborations with Little Big Town, John Mayer, and Michael McDonald, who sings on the original track ‘We Go Back’. Urban says he and his crew were playing and recording purely for the joy of it, and that yacht rock is the perfect genre for that spirit.
