Local Volunteer Spreads Service Animal Awareness

Joe Flores, a 49-year-old disabled FIFA volunteer, and his service dog, Kiki, are preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Arlington. Flores and Kiki will be volunteering at VIP guest services, helping ensure guests in VIP lounge areas and private suites are able to enjoy each match.

Service Animal Awareness

Flores, who has severe sleep apnea and walking issues, relies on Kiki to detect if his heart rate is too fast and to alert him to take breaks when needed. Kiki is also trained to seek help if Flores were to collapse due to a pinched nerve. Flores emphasized that patience and understanding have been key in having a service animal.

Monica Paul, the president of the North Texas FWC Organizing Committee, shared that having a diverse group of volunteers was essential in the World Cup experience, especially with visitors from all over the world. Flores hopes to be a vehicle of education to the international visitors coming to Arlington, teaching them about the importance of service animals and their role in assisting individuals with disabilities.
