Overland Park has rolled out 60 new e-bikes as part of a pilot program with BikeWalkKC, a regional nonprofit. The e-bikes are pedal-assisted and throttle-free, providing a convenient and environmentally friendly mode of transportation for residents and visitors.
E-Bike Locations
The e-bikes are placed in clusters of 10 or so at six designated racks throughout the city, primarily along Metcalf Avenue between downtown and the Convention Center, as well as at Roe Park. This location was chosen to provide easy access to and from the Convention Center, which will act as a transportation and welcome hub during FIFA-related festivities.
According to Lara Isch, sustainability manager for Overland Park, the e-bikes will initially be placed along large transportation corridors, especially in advance of the World Cup. However, in the future, the e-bikes could be moved to other locations around the city or additional hubs with more e-bikes could be added if there is demand for them.
Community Reaction
Mayor Curt Skoog celebrated the e-bikes’ arrival, stating that the city wants to ensure its transportation options grow with it. The e-bikes provide a link to and from community hubs, parks, and commercial districts, making Overland Park more connected than ever before.
Eric Vaughan, director of bike share for BikeWalkKC, noted that Overland Park is one of the real cornerstones of the metro community, and its addition to the e-bike network helps fill a gap. Skoog offered similar sentiments, saying the e-bikes are completing a missing piece of the regional puzzle.
