Young People Turning to AI for Emotional Support

A new study has found that nearly 1 in 5 adolescents and young adults have used AI chatbots for advice or help when feeling upset, nervous, or anxious. The study, published in JAMA Pediatrics, surveyed over 1,000 young people across the United States and found that many are using chatbots repeatedly and consider the advice helpful.

Concerns About AI Chatbots

However, experts are raising concerns about the accuracy and limitations of AI chatbots. Dr. Leana Wen, a CNN wellness expert, notes that chatbots can provide incorrect information and may not be able to recognize when someone needs urgent intervention. She also warns that chatbots may reinforce unhealthy thinking patterns and delay young people from seeking professional help.

According to Dr. Wen, parents and healthcare professionals should be aware of the potential risks and benefits of AI chatbots and have open and honest conversations with young people about their use. She recommends that parents approach AI chatbots in the same way they approach social media, by understanding what tools their child is using and asking open-ended questions.

Positive Role of AI Chatbots

While there are concerns about AI chatbots, Dr. Wen also notes that they may play a positive role in emotional support and mental health. For example, AI chatbots may help young people practice difficult conversations, learn basic coping strategies, or identify mental health resources. However, she emphasizes that AI chatbots should not be used as a substitute for human relationships and professional care.

As the use of AI chatbots becomes more widespread, it is essential for parents, healthcare professionals, and young people themselves to be aware of the potential benefits and risks. By having open and honest conversations and being mindful of the limitations of AI chatbots, we can ensure that young people receive the support they need to maintain good mental health.
