The Literacy Council of Bowie and Miller Counties has relocated from the Texarkana College campus to a new facility near downtown, adding space and easier access for the students and families it serves. The organization recently relocated to 520 W. 12th St., where it will continue providing adult literacy, GED preparation, and English language learning, among other services.
New Location Offers Improved Accessibility
Executive Director Jacklyn Whittington said the move comes as Texarkana College prepares for major renovation and construction projects on its campus. While searching for a new home, Literacy Council leaders prioritized a location that would be easier for students to access and closer to resources they already use.
Whittington said she is grateful for the space the college provided. The organization spent months evaluating potential locations before selecting a downtown site. “We wanted to be somewhere visible, walkable, and easy to reach for the people who rely on our services,” Whittington said. “Our new downtown location puts us close to public transportation and several community resources our students already utilize, making it easier for them to access the support they need.”
The move has already created improvements for both students and volunteers. The previous location required visitors to navigate a large college campus, while the new building offers direct access and dedicated space for programs and services.
Whittington said the biggest difference in the facility is the layout. The new facility gives the nonprofit dedicated spaces that allow multiple tutoring sessions and classes to happen simultaneously without distractions. “We now have the ability to bring in larger groups and participants from other organizations in ways that simply weren’t possible before,” she said. “Ultimately, it gives us more flexibility to meet people where they are and connect them with the education and support they need.”
Transition and Future Plans
The transition required weeks of preparation before the organization could officially open its doors at the new location. “We purchased the building in April and spent several weeks preparing the space before reopening June 1,” Whittington said. “It was a busy few weeks, but we’re thrilled to finally be welcoming students and volunteers into our new home.”
The Literacy Council of Bowie and Miller Counties is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call 903-255-7567.
