Cleveland will celebrate Flag Day this weekend with multiple events honoring the adoption of the nation’s first official flag in 1777. The Joint Veterans Council of Cuyahoga County will hold a celebration at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, which will also commemorate the 251st birthday of the U.S. Army and honor newly enlisted soldiers and sailors.
Local Events
Additionally, members of local Boy Scout troops will gather at the James A. Garfield National Historic Site in Mentor to retire used and unserviceable American flags. Mayfield Heights will feature a parade and country music concert. Residents can also drop off worn-out flags at the Veterans Service Commission of Cuyahoga County, which will be disposed of respectfully by veterans groups.
The legend of Betsy Ross, who is believed to have made the first American flag, will also be remembered during the celebrations. Although there are no written records of her being hired to create the flag, historians have found evidence suggesting that she did indeed make it.
