Local Family Acquires The Reflector

The Reflector, a local newspaper, is returning to local ownership after 17 years. Camden Spiller, a member of a local family, has acquired the newspaper with the goal of making it an even better place to live, work, and raise a family.

Local Ownership Matters

Spiller’s vision for Battleground is to make it a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family. With his wife’s family going back five generations in Clark County, their commitment to the community is personal. They believe that local institutions, such as The Reflector, should be owned by local people.

The Reflector will continue to celebrate what is good in the community without pretending everything is perfect. It will raise questions without tearing people down and provide reliable information instead of rumor-filled stories. The newspaper will also invest more in the people who run it, with plans to replace Centralia-based management and support functions with local management and staff after a six-month transition period.

A Smooth Transition

The current Editor-in-Chief, Eric Schwartz, will remain at the helm for a transitional period. The Reflector will inevitably include coverage relating to Spiller’s family and their businesses, but he promises that the coverage will disclose any potential conflicts and will not give them special treatment.

The Reflector’s return to local ownership is a positive development for the community. It will help foster honest conversations on important questions, such as what should change, what should stay the same, and how to create opportunities for children. A healthy local newspaper is essential for a thriving community, and The Reflector is committed to serving North Clark County for generations to come.
