Bob Simmons, the first African American head coach in Big 8 Conference history and former Oklahoma State football coach, has died at the age of 77. Simmons became the 20th football coach in Oklahoma State history in 1994 and coached the Cowboys for six seasons, winning 30 games and leading the team to the 1997 Alamo Bowl.
Legacy at Oklahoma State
During his tenure, Simmons guided Oklahoma State to three victories over Oklahoma, including a 1995 win that broke a 19-game losing streak against the Sooners. In 1997, Simmons was named Big 12 Coach of the Year. That season, the Cowboys were ranked as high as No. 12 in the country and defeated both Texas and Oklahoma.
