Trump Attends NBA Finals Game, Prompting Heightened Security in NYC

New York City is witnessing heightened security measures as President Donald Trump attends Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. This marks the first time a sitting U.S. president has attended an NBA Finals game, prompting the New York Police Department and Secret Service to establish a multi-block security perimeter around Madison Square Garden.

Security Measures and Fan Experience

Fans attending the game are facing extensive security protocols, including a TSA-style screening process and a no-bag policy. The NYPD has advised attendees to arrive two hours early to navigate the security checkpoints. The usual watch party outside the arena has been canceled due to the security measures, with plans to relocate it to Bryant Park, a few blocks away.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch explained, “The NYPD, in coordination with the Secret Service, made the decision that we could not support watch parties right outside of the Garden for Game 3 due to the presidential visit.” Despite these changes, Tisch assured that watch parties would return for Game 4.

Impact on Knicks Fans

The Knicks, who have reached the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999, have seen a surge in fan interest. However, the combination of high ticket prices and increased security has made attending the game in person challenging. Ticket prices have soared, with the cheapest seats exceeding $6,000, prompting many fans to seek alternative viewing options at local bars and gatherings throughout the city.

Knicks guard Jose Alvarado, a New York native, expressed the city’s resilience, stating, “We’re New Yorkers. We’re going to find a way to watch a game, and that’s what we’re doing.”

Presidential Attendance at Sporting Events

This is not the first time President Trump has attended a major sporting event, and his presence often results in significant security measures. Last year, his attendance at the U.S. Open men’s singles final led to delays for fans due to similar security protocols.

Despite the logistical challenges, Knicks center Mitchell Robinson remained focused on the game, saying, “Cool, I guess. We can still get out there and play (no matter) who’s here and who’s not.”

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other dignitaries are also expected to attend the game, adding to the event’s significance. As the Knicks aim for their first NBA title since 1973, the city’s enthusiasm remains undeterred by the added security measures.
