El Paso Braces for First Triple-Digit Heatwave of the Year

El Paso, Texas, is facing its first triple-digit heatwave of the year, with temperatures expected to reach 102°F today. The city is under an ABC-7 First Alert as residents brace for a week of intense heat.

Heatwave Impact on the Community

Yesterday, temperatures in El Paso nearly reached triple digits, peaking at 99°F. Las Cruces is also experiencing high temperatures, with a peak of 99°F expected today. Despite dry and calm conditions, temperatures are anticipated to rise further in the coming days.

Heat exhaustion is a significant risk during this period, with symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, and heavy sweating occurring within 30 minutes of direct sun exposure. Heat stroke, a life-threatening condition, can occur when the body stops sweating and internal temperatures reach 104°F or higher, necessitating immediate medical attention.

Vulnerable Populations at Risk

The elderly, young children, outdoor workers, and individuals without functioning air conditioning are particularly vulnerable during this heatwave. Overnight lows in El Paso are only dropping to the mid-70s, offering little relief for those without air conditioning, leading to continuous heat stress.

The city may activate cooling centers if temperatures reach triple digits today. However, extended activation, including late hours and Sunday openings, will only occur if temperatures remain at or above 103°F for three consecutive days.

This developing story will be updated as more information becomes available.
