Justice Department to Revoke Citizenship from 17 Individuals in Nationwide Effort

The U.S. Justice Department has announced plans to revoke the citizenship of 17 individuals across the nation, as part of the Trump administration’s intensified efforts to address naturalization fraud. This move underscores the administration’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the naturalization process.

Denaturalization Efforts Intensify

Since President Donald Trump returned to office, his administration has focused on denaturalization, targeting those accused of fraudulently obtaining U.S. citizenship. The latest cases involve accusations of fraud and, in some instances, sexual abuse of a minor. Denaturalization, a rare legal process, can only be pursued in federal court.

Historically, the U.S. has revoked citizenship for various reasons, including false statements about arrival dates, age, or marital status, and even for political affiliations, as seen during World War II with pro-Nazi German Americans. Under the Biden administration, 24 denaturalization cases were filed, but the Trump administration has already surpassed this number within the past year.

Administration’s Stance

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche emphasized the administration’s zero-tolerance policy for abuses of the naturalization process, stating, “Gaining U.S. citizenship is a privilege and under the steadfast leadership of President Trump, this Department of Justice maintains a zero-tolerance policy for the abuse of this process.” Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin echoed this sentiment, affirming the administration’s commitment to using all lawful means to denaturalize and remove those who have abused the system.
