Trump: China Won’t Challenge U.S. on Iran; Praises Xi Ahead of Visit

President Trump said he and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have a strong working relationship and that China has not challenged the United States over the Iran situation, comments made as tensions remain high in the Strait of Hormuz and ahead of a scheduled May summit in Beijing. He framed the visit as important for business ties and regional stability while warning Iran that failing to reach a deal with the U.S. would be costly for Tehran. The president also reiterated that both military posture and diplomacy are on the table as the region watches closely.

Trump emphasized the personal rapport he claims to have with Xi and the leverage that relationship brings, saying plainly, “I have a very good relationship with President Xi. You know, I find him to be a tremendous guy, and we get along well. And you see how we do,” and pointing to the economic ties between the two nations as a stabilizing factor. He described the trade relationship in simple terms, noting, “We do a lot of business with China and making a lot of money. We’re making a lot of money. It’s different than it used to be, but I’ll be talking about — that’ll be one subject,” which frames the visit as about both security and prosperity. That mix of blunt diplomacy and business-first realism is a hallmark of his approach to Beijing.

On the Iran question, Trump praised Xi’s handling and said China has not pushed back against U.S. moves in the region, asserting, “But he’s been very nice about this. You know, in all fairness, he gets like, 60% of his oil from Hormuz. And he’s been, I think he’s been very respectful.” He doubled down with, “We haven’t been challenged by China. They don’t challenge us. And he wouldn’t do that. I don’t think he’d do that because of me. But, I think he’s been very respectful,” framing Chinese restraint as both self-interest and a nod to his own ties to the leader. That line of reasoning suggests a belief that personal relationships can shape international calculations.

Trump made clear he views the Iranian regime as vulnerable if it refuses to negotiate, insisting that without a deal Tehran’s position would rapidly deteriorate. “Oh, they don’t make a deal? They won’t be successful. They’ll go very quickly and methodically. Believe me, it’ll be very easy,” he said, delivering a warning intended to underscore U.S. resolve and the odds he sees stacked against the current Iranian leadership. The rhetoric is meant to send a signal not just to Tehran but to foreign partners that American pressure and readiness remain high.

The president confirmed the dates for his Beijing meeting with Xi, saying the trip will take place on May 14-15, and framed the diplomacy as reciprocal. He also posted on Truth Social: “First Lady Melania and I will also host President Xi and Madame Peng for a reciprocal visit in Washington, D.C., at a later date, this year. Our Representatives are finalizing preparations for these Historic Visits. I look very much forward to spending time with President Xi in what will be, I am sure, a Monumental Event,” which he used to underline the ceremonial and strategic weight he attributes to the exchange. That public note blends optics with policy, signaling the administration sees the meetings as a big deal on the world stage.

Pressed about recent incidents in the Strait of Hormuz and what would constitute a breach of the current truce, Trump was both curt and deliberate, telling reporters, “Well, you’ll find out, because I’ll let you know.” He added a pointed nod to military readiness, saying, “They know what to do… and they know what not to do, more importantly, actually,” which serves as a reminder that behind the summitry there remains a posture of deterrence. Taken together, the comments aim to reassure allies and warn adversaries that diplomacy is backed by prepared, clear consequences.

TRUMP OPENS HORMUZ UNDER FIRE WITH ‘PROJECT FREEDOM’ AS IRAN WARNS OF ATTACKS captures the tone of the moment, where high-stakes negotiations and face-to-face diplomacy are being staged alongside a message of strength. For supporters, the combination of personal leverage with Xi, firm talk toward Tehran, and visible preparations for both summit and defense reads as a practical, results-focused posture heading into a consequential diplomatic pairing in Beijing.
