This year’s campaign, themed ‘Respect The Storm: Ready. Set. Monsoon,’ will feature daily safety topics shared on social media. Residents are encouraged to engage with and share these educational materials to spread awareness.
The week will cover various topics, including an introduction to monsoons, extreme heat, flash flooding and debris flows, lightning, downburst winds, dust storms, and safe recreation guidance. Each day focuses on a specific aspect of monsoon safety, providing valuable information to help the public prepare.
Preparing for the Monsoon Season
The monsoon season, expected to start in mid-June and continue through September, brings both much-needed rainfall and potential weather hazards. Emergency managers warn that dry ground conditions can heighten the risk of flash flooding, especially when heavy rain occurs in short bursts.
Residents are urged to take proactive steps to prepare, such as clearing debris, checking drainage systems, trimming hazardous trees, and assembling emergency supplies. Sandbags are available at many fire stations, and officials recommend having important documents and a go-bag ready in case of evacuation.
