China’s Xi Pledges Closer Ties with North Korea to Counter Global Hegemony

Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed his commitment to enhancing China’s relationship with North Korea, emphasizing a joint effort to counter global hegemony and militarism. This statement was published in North Korea’s state newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, ahead of Xi’s visit to Pyongyang.

Strengthening Ties

Xi highlighted China’s unwavering policy to upgrade ties with its neighbor, North Korea. He stated that the two countries would strengthen exchanges across various sectors to foster development and safeguard a fair global order. Xi’s commentary underscored the importance of opposing hegemony, authoritarianism, and any attempts to revive militarism, which he believes threaten regional security and stability.

In addition to political and security cooperation, Xi pledged to work with North Korea to promote fair and orderly multilateralism and inclusive economic globalization. He emphasized the goal of building a community of shared human destiny, which he believes would benefit the world.

Upcoming Visit

Xi is expected to arrive in North Korea for a two-day visit, marking his first trip to the country in seven years. During his visit, Xi is scheduled to hold talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. This visit is seen as an effort by Beijing to bring Pyongyang closer into its sphere of influence.

Last year, Xi hosted Kim and other leaders at a significant military parade in Beijing, where Russian President Vladimir Putin was also present. Since then, North Korea has resumed border crossings with China and increased exchanges, which had been halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
