The Studio@620 in St. Petersburg is set to host the rock musical ‘Passing Strange,’ directed by Erica Sutherlin. The production, which opens on June 11 and runs through June 21, marks a significant addition to the theater’s diverse lineup under Sutherlin’s leadership. Known for its innovative programming, The Studio@620 has become a hub for creative expression, offering a mix of stage plays, art exhibits, and dance productions.
A Journey of Self-Discovery
‘Passing Strange’ tells the story of an unnamed young man, referred to as ‘The Youth,’ as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery. The musical, written by California musician Stew with music and arrangements by Heidi Rodewald, originally debuted Off-Broadway in 2007 and later moved to Broadway, earning a Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical.
The narrative unfolds through a blend of rock ‘n’ roll, soul, punk, and blues, with Stew’s character serving as the narrator. The musical explores themes of identity and belonging, as the protagonist navigates his way through life’s challenges, seeking his ‘real’ self across Europe.
Breaking Stereotypes
Director Erica Sutherlin emphasizes the unique perspective of the musical, which deviates from traditional narratives of Black youth. The protagonist, a young Black man from Middle Class America, is not escaping poverty or trauma but is simply exploring the world beyond his familiar surroundings. This fresh take on the Black American experience highlights the universal quest for identity and self-expression.
The cast includes Jacob Smith as the Narrator and Andre ‘Shacar’ Smith as The Youth, supported by a talented ensemble and a live four-member band. Sutherlin’s vision for The Studio@620 continues to evolve, with plans to further enrich the space with diverse artistic offerings.
