Danish soccer star Christian Eriksen experienced a medical scare during an international friendly match against Ukraine on Sunday. The 34-year-old collapsed near midfield, prompting immediate medical attention.
Fortunately, the Danish Football Union reported that Eriksen was “conscious and feeling well under the circumstances.” The incident led to the abandonment of the game, which saw Denmark leading 2-1 in the 61st minute.
Previous Health Challenges
Eriksen’s medical history includes a significant incident during the European Championship in June 2021, where he suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch during a match against Finland. The scene was distressing, with Eriksen unresponsive and requiring CPR to be resuscitated.
Following that incident, Eriksen was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, a heart-starting device. Denmark’s team doctor, Morten Boesen, confirmed that Eriksen’s pacemaker responded appropriately during the recent scare.
Boesen stated, “He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.” Eriksen is not expected to undergo further examinations at the hospital, and he has expressed his gratitude to his teammates and fans.
Eriksen has had a distinguished career, playing for clubs like Tottenham and Manchester United in the English Premier League, and currently represents VfL Wolfsburg in Germany’s 2. Bundesliga.
