ALDOT Seeks Public Feedback on I-459 Improvements in Hoover

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is reaching out to the residents of Hoover for their input on a significant infrastructure project. The proposed improvements target a well-traveled section of Interstate 459, specifically between Lorna Road and the western edge of Little Shades Creek, east of Interstate 65. This project aims to replace deteriorating concrete pavement and improve traffic flow in one of Birmingham’s busiest corridors.

Project Details and Impact

ALDOT plans to construct new auxiliary lanes between I-65 and Acton Road in both directions. These additional lanes are designed to alleviate congestion caused by merging traffic, which is a common issue given that over 115,000 vehicles use this section of I-459 daily. The improvements are expected to significantly enhance the driving experience for local commuters and travelers alike.

However, the project may require long-term lane closures during construction, potentially affecting daily commutes. Temporary ramp closures at the I-459 and I-65 interchange might also be necessary, with detours routed through U.S. 31, Alabama 119, and I-65. ALDOT is mindful of the inconvenience and is working to minimize disruptions as much as possible.

Community Involvement

ALDOT has made an online public involvement presentation available, detailing the proposed improvements. Residents are encouraged to review the project information and submit their feedback through ALDOT’s public involvement process. The public comment period is open until June 12, providing a platform for community voices to be heard and considered in the final planning stages.

The project is scheduled to be let for construction bids by the end of 2026, with construction potentially lasting up to 15 months once it begins. ALDOT’s initiative underscores the importance of community engagement in infrastructure projects, ensuring that local needs and concerns are addressed.
