The city of Port St. Lucie recently hosted its 20th annual Hurricane Preparedness Expo at the MIDFLORIDA Event Center. This family-friendly event aimed to equip residents with the knowledge and tools necessary to stay safe during the hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.
Community Engagement and Education
Attendees had the opportunity to meet the WPBF 25 News’ First Warning Weather Team, including Chief Meteorologist Cris Martinez, and meteorologists Glenn Glazer, Nikki Sheaks, and Brooke Silverang. The team answered questions and provided valuable insights into hurricane preparedness.
Martinez shared his enthusiasm on Facebook, stating, “Always a blast hanging out with you at the @cityofpsl Hurricane Preparedness Expo. Great conversations and information today as we get you ready for another hurricane season.”
Interactive Learning for Families
The expo featured nearly 50 booths offering hurricane-ready products and information. A new Kid Zone offered hands-on hurricane education, including coloring activities, emergency kit building, and a scavenger hunt. Additionally, a Wind Simulator Experience allowed participants to feel the force of 78 mph winds, simulating a Category 1 hurricane.
Other attractions included a photo booth, family-friendly games, and a raffle with preparedness-themed prizes. An emergency management panel featured specialists from St. Lucie, Indian River, and Martin counties, as well as the city of Port St. Lucie, providing expert advice on storm readiness.
WPBF was a proud sponsor of the event, which emphasized the importance of knowing your zone, making a plan, building a kit, and staying informed throughout the hurricane season.
