NCTCOG Prepares North Texas for World Cup Traffic Challenges

As Arlington, Texas, gears up to host nine matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026™, including a semifinal, the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is taking proactive steps to manage the expected surge in travel demand. The matches, scheduled from June 14 to July 14 at AT&T Stadium, are anticipated to draw thousands of visitors, placing a significant spotlight on the region.

Travel Strategies and Resources

To assist both residents and visitors, NCTCOG’s Transportation Department has launched a dedicated match-day travel resource at www.nctcog.org/gameplan. This platform provides essential information such as match schedules, anticipated traffic windows, road closure maps, transit details, and travel tips designed to help travelers plan ahead and minimize delays. A Spanish version of the site is also available.

According to Natalie Bettger, senior program manager of Congestion Management and System Operations for NCTCOG, “We encourage residents to check travel information before heading out and consider small adjustments on match days. By planning ahead, we can help keep North Texas moving while welcoming visitors from around the world.”

Impact on Local Travel

On match days, travelers should expect increased congestion, particularly along major corridors such as Interstate Highway 30 and State Highway 360. Dallas’ Fair Park, hosting the FIFA Fan Festival™, will also experience heightened activity. Residents are advised to review road closure maps and peak travel periods available on the NCTCOG website before venturing out.

Encouraging Alternative Commutes

To alleviate congestion, NCTCOG suggests temporary travel adjustments, such as carpooling, vanpooling, biking, or walking, when feasible. Regional transit systems are expected to see increased ridership, so riders are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance.

Employer Involvement

NCTCOG is urging employers to support flexible work arrangements on match days to help reduce peak-hour congestion. Options include telecommuting, flexible hours, and staggered shifts. Employers are also encouraged to share match-day travel information with their employees ahead of time.

World Cup Commuter Challenge

Residents can participate in the TryParkingIt.com World Cup Commuter Challenge from June 11 to July 19. By logging alternative commutes, participants earn entries into prize drawings while contributing to reduced congestion. This initiative offers North Texans a chance to engage with the World Cup experience, even if they are not attending the matches. More details can be found at TryParkingIt.com.
