Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso, Texas, became a hub of celebration and community spirit as it hosted the 5th annual Cancer Survivor Line Dance Celebration. This event, organized in partnership with the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation (RGCF), took place on Saturday, June 6, in honor of National Cancer Survivor Month.
Celebrating Survivors with Dance and Art
The event, themed ‘Give Cancer the Boot’ with a 50s twist, was held from noon to 2 p.m. and featured a variety of activities aimed at celebrating and recognizing cancer survivors from across the Borderland. Attendees were treated to line dancing, door prizes, and an art exhibit showcasing works created by cancer survivors themselves.
The festivities kicked off with a ‘Give Cancer the Boot’ costume contest, where participants donned creative outfits in line with the theme. The top three crowd favorites were awarded gift cards, adding an element of friendly competition to the day.
Community Engagement and Participation
In addition to the dance and costume contest, the event encouraged community engagement by requiring participants interested in learning the ‘Celebration Dance’ to register and attend a dance rehearsal prior to the event. This not only ensured a well-coordinated performance but also fostered a sense of community and support among attendees.
Organizers emphasized the importance of celebrating the strength and resilience of cancer survivors, making the event a heartwarming tribute to those who have battled the disease. The combination of dance, art, and community participation created a vibrant atmosphere, highlighting the power of community support in the journey of healing and recovery.
