In a disheartening incident in Clay County, Kentucky, a couple’s tiny home was stolen from their property, leaving them without a place to call home and robbing them of cherished memories. The theft, which also involved a break-in of their locked shed containing generators and tools, has left the couple feeling uprooted and vulnerable.
Carefully Planned Theft
Lester Hurst, the owner of the tiny home, described the theft as a calculated event, requiring skill and planning. ‘As it being a calculated event, 100%. It took some work. It took some skill. The driveway coming out is very narrow. You’ve got to be a good driver,’ Hurst explained. The couple had built the home from scratch in 2018 and had been living on the property for just a year.
Helena Peters, Hurst’s wife, expressed the emotional toll of the loss. ‘We were in the middle of setting everything up. Yes, we still had the wheels on it,’ she said. The couple was still settling into their new home when it was taken.
Loss Beyond the Physical
The theft has hit the couple hard, not just financially but emotionally. Peters shared that the home contained sentimental items from her late father, making the loss even more painful. ‘My dad when he passed, all of us children, we got some sentimental stuff from his. So, it’s all in there and it’s like I have nothing,’ she lamented.
Hurst described the aftermath of the theft as looking like a ‘hurricane just ransacked’ the area. The couple misses the sense of security their home provided. ‘Security, you feel uprooted,’ Hurst said. Despite the loss, they have found solace in the kindness of others, reminding them of the goodness in people.
