Ivanka Trump’s Luxury Resort Plans Stir Controversy in Albania

Ivanka Trump, daughter of the U.S. President, and her husband Jared Kushner are at the center of controversy over their plans to develop a luxury resort on Albania’s protected coastline. The project, which includes a 1,400-hectare private island and five miles of beachfront, has sparked protests in the Albanian capital, Tirana, and criticism from conservation groups.

Environmental Concerns

The proposed development is set to take place in the Vjosa–Narta Protected Landscape, a region home to endangered species such as monk seals and nesting sea turtles. Conservationists, including BirdLife’s Europe director Ariel Brunner, have raised alarms about the potential ecological damage, noting the presence of heavy machinery and lack of visible permits at the site.

Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama has defended the project, asserting that environmental impact assessments are underway and that development and nature can coexist. However, the project has faced scrutiny due to a 2024 legal change allowing luxury resorts in protected areas, which critics argue contradicts European Union environmental standards.

Local and International Reactions

Protests have erupted both at the site and in Tirana, with demonstrators carrying signs depicting local wildlife. The backlash has been fueled by concerns over potential conflicts of interest, as Kushner serves as a special envoy for his father-in-law, President Donald Trump, while engaging in private business ventures.

Despite the controversy, Sazan Real Estate Development LLC, the company behind the project, claims it aims to create a world-class destination that benefits local communities through job creation and responsible environmental stewardship.

The European Commission has expressed concerns about the project’s compliance with EU laws, and Albania’s special anti-corruption office has launched an investigation into the development. As the situation unfolds, the debate over balancing economic development with environmental preservation continues to intensify.
