Gun sales in Virginia have experienced a notable increase as residents prepare for the upcoming July 1 ban on semi-automatic rifles with magazine capacities exceeding 15 rounds. This legislation, sponsored by Democrats, was signed into law by Governor Abigail Spanberger last month.
Background Checks Skyrocket
According to FBI data, the number of background checks for firearm purchases has surged since the introduction of the bill in January. In May alone, 75,376 background checks were conducted, more than doubling the 37,167 checks from May 2025. March saw the highest number of checks this year, with 79,846 compared to 47,069 last year. By the end of May, a total of 347,167 checks had been completed, setting a pace to surpass the 521,283 checks conducted throughout the previous year.
Impact on Local Gun Shops
Local gun shop owners have reported a significant increase in sales. James Sprouse, manager at Ginger Mafia Tactical, noted the rapid turnover of inventory, stating, “The second we get them in, they’re out the door.” Similarly, Trey Boyd, co-owner of Tactical Operations Vault, mentioned that components for AR-15-style rifles are selling out quickly. Boyd expressed hope that the law might be overturned in court, as it will soon become a misdemeanor to buy, sell, transfer, or manufacture these firearms.
Legislative Intent and Public Reaction
State Senator Saddam Salim, who introduced the bill, emphasized the need to gradually reduce the number of semi-automatic rifles in circulation without criminalizing current owners. Governor Spanberger echoed this sentiment, stating that the law aims to protect families and support law enforcement by keeping firearms designed for maximum casualties off the streets.
