Xavier Becerra Advances to California Gubernatorial Election

In the race for California governor, Democrat Xavier Becerra has secured a spot in the general election. Becerra, who has a long history in public service, including roles as state attorney general and U.S. health secretary, presented himself as the most seasoned candidate in a competitive field.

Experience and Challenges

Becerra’s campaign highlighted his extensive experience, which he believes positions him well to lead California, the nation’s most populous state. He emphasized his readiness to uphold California’s values and governance. During his tenure as attorney general, Becerra was known for his legal challenges against the Trump administration, filing over 120 actions on issues ranging from immigration to climate policy.

His leadership as health secretary during the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2021 unaccompanied migrant children crisis was scrutinized by opponents. Concerns were raised about the conditions in shelters managed by the Department of Health and Human Services and the vetting process for sponsors of migrant children.

Policy Proposals

If elected, Becerra plans to declare states of emergency to tackle high energy costs and housing shortages, as well as to freeze home insurance rates. These proposals aim to address some of the pressing challenges facing Californians today.

California, known for its diversity, has predominantly elected white male governors. Becerra’s election would mark a significant milestone as he would become the first Latino governor since the late 1800s.
