The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), in collaboration with the Salcha-Delta Soil and Water Conservation District, is calling for public input on proposed enhancements to the Delta Junction Bison Range (DJBR). This initiative aims to improve the habitat and forage available for bison in the area.

Background and Purpose

Established in 1979, the DJBR was created to support free-ranging bison, provide winter habitat, and reduce bison-related damage to agricultural lands. Over the years, the range has been managed to maintain forage that attracts bison, delaying their migration onto agricultural lands and providing hunting opportunities on state land.

However, some fields have seen a decline in productivity. The current project seeks to revitalize these fields and expand bison forage by clearing, tilling, and planting new areas. Proposed activities include tilling, planting, fertilizing, burning, and herbicide use on existing fields, as well as drilling wells and installing additional water sources. Approximately 1,000 acres of forested land within the DJBR are slated for conversion to new fields.

Funding and Environmental Assessment

This project is funded by Wildlife Restoration Act grants, matched by state funds. Due to the use of federal funds, an Environmental Assessment (EA) is required under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The EA will determine the scope of issues for analysis, including potential effects on the human environment.
