San Diego’s 48th District Race: GOP’s Jim Desmond Advances

In San Diego, the race for the 48th Congressional District has taken a significant turn as Republican County Supervisor Jim Desmond advances to the general election. Desmond, who received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump, will face off against Democratic city councilmember Marni von Wilpert. This development comes as a relief for Republicans in a district that has been redrawn to slightly favor Democrats.

Desmond’s Strong Position

Desmond’s advancement was anticipated due to the absence of major Republican challengers. His established presence in local politics, bolstered by community involvement such as donations to youth soccer leagues, has made him a popular choice among voters. Desmond secured nearly 41 percent of the vote in California’s top-two primary system, where the highest vote-getters proceed to the general election.

The 48th District, once a Republican stronghold, has seen a shift towards Democratic preferences over the past decade. However, current vote counts suggest a more competitive race than Democrats expected, with many Republican ballots still being counted. The slow ballot counting process in California means final results could take weeks, with 275,000 ballots still uncounted in San Diego County alone.

Democratic Dynamics

On the Democratic side, Marni von Wilpert emerged as the candidate to challenge Desmond, defeating Ammar Campa-Najjar. Von Wilpert’s victory reflects a broader trend in California where more moderate Democrats are prevailing over progressive challengers. Her track record of flipping her city council district from Republican to Democratic played a crucial role in her selection.

Local Democratic officials largely supported von Wilpert, viewing her as a candidate with a strong electoral record and fewer vulnerabilities. This decision aligns with a statewide focus on gaining control of Congress to counteract former President Trump, rather than demanding strict ideological conformity from candidates.

Republican Party Dynamics

Within the Republican Party, there is an ongoing debate between established candidates and those further to the right. In a state Senate race in San Diego, Kristie Bruce-Lane, backed by activist Carl DeMaio, leads against Ed Musgrove, who has the support of most county party delegates. This intra-party conflict mirrors similar dynamics in Northern California, where Republican Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil faces a challenge from the right.

Despite internal tensions, party leaders remain optimistic about gaining seats in the state legislature, buoyed by strong candidates like gubernatorial frontrunner Steve Hilton. The outcome of these races will be pivotal in shaping the political landscape in California.
