Putnam County, West Virginia – On Sunday, the county celebrated its 19th annual Veterans Appreciation Day at the Putnam County Judicial Building. The ceremony brought together veterans, families, and community members to recognize the service and sacrifices of local men and women who have defended our nation.
Speakers highlight the importance of remembrance
Marine Corps veteran Jim McDade opened the program by stressing that keeping the memory of veterans alive is essential. “We just got to keep remembering the veterans and people who sacrifice the most for this country,” McDade said. “If we don’t, people will forget about it, and we can’t forget.”
Navy veteran Paul Brown followed, urging younger generations to learn more about military history. “There’s a lot out there that’s not really taught and should be taught,” he noted. “It’s an important part of history.”
Music and community participation
The ceremony featured a performance by the Winfield High School Band, providing a patriotic backdrop to the remarks. Attendees were encouraged to thank veterans they encounter in everyday life, reinforcing the day’s message of ongoing gratitude.
West Virginia’s strong veteran presence
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, West Virginia has a higher share of veterans than the national average, with more than 107,000 veterans—about 7.5% of the adult civilian population—calling the state home. McDade highlighted this statistic, saying the state’s military service reflects a deep‑rooted patriotic tradition. “A lot of people serve their country here,” he said.
Continuing the tradition
While the annual ceremony honors veterans each year, Brown reminded residents that appreciation should extend beyond the official event. “Just make sure that when you see a veteran, you say thank you for your service, honor them,” he advised.
The 19th Veterans Appreciation Day underscores Putnam County’s commitment to honoring those who have defended our freedoms and to fostering a culture of respect for service members across generations.
