Riverside Ice House is a no-frills outdoor bar and grill on the west bank of the Arkansas River, and it has been drawing a steady crowd from the Riverside neighborhood and beyond for years without trying particularly hard to be anything other than what it is.
The setup is exactly what you’d expect from the name: a covered outdoor patio with picnic tables, a walk-up order window, and a view of the river through the trees. There’s no indoor dining room to speak of. When it’s cold, you’re mostly out of luck, but from late spring through early fall, the place fills up fast — especially on weekend afternoons when families, cyclists coming off the river path, and after-work regulars converge at the same time.
The menu is short. Burgers, hot dogs, brats, nachos, and a rotating handful of daily specials are the core of it. The burgers are hand-pattied and cooked to order on a flat-top — nothing fancy, but consistently solid. If you go once and order the double cheeseburger with grilled onions, you’ll understand why people come back without thinking too hard about it. The fries are crinkle-cut and served hot, which is all you really need them to be.
Drinks lean toward canned beer and simple mixed drinks. Don’t go expecting craft cocktails or an extensive tap list. The beer selection is primarily domestic and a few regional options, priced the way you’d want a riverside patio bar to price them — around $4 to $6 for a can, depending on what you grab. Full meals typically run $10 to $15 per person, which makes it one of the more affordable sit-down (or sit-outside) options in this part of town.
Parking is available in a small lot adjacent to the patio. The location puts it within easy walking distance of Sim Park and the river trail system, so it functions naturally as a stopping point if you’re out for a long walk or ride along the Arkansas. That foot traffic — people arriving on bikes or on foot — gives the place a relaxed, unhurried energy that you don’t always find at spots that have to work harder to fill seats.
Crowds peak between noon and 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. If you want a table without waiting around, aim for a weekday evening or get there before 11:30 on weekends. The staff works fast and the line moves, but seating is first-come at the picnic tables, and on a warm Saturday in June, those fill up.
Riverside Ice House won’t show up on many best-of lists, and it’s not trying to. What it offers is a genuinely pleasant outdoor eating experience in a good location, with food that does what it’s supposed to do, at a price that doesn’t require you to think about it. For a city that sometimes overcomplicates its dining scene, that counts for more than it might seem.
It’s located at 2020 N. River Blvd., just north of the 21st Street bridge on the west side of the river. Hours vary by season, so check ahead before making a special trip, particularly early or late in the season when they sometimes close for weather.
